Hidden Blessings

Have you ever dreaded doing something only to realize as you are doing it or after it was over that it was actually kind of fun?  This happens to me often.  I usually find I was being a bit overly dramatic.  In fact, I had that experience this week.  In my defense, I had an exceedingly busy week at work and outside of work I was busy too.  So I was a little crabby from lack of sleep and lack of quiet time.

Last week the president of the company I work for invited me to a reception we host every year at a huge conference within our industry.  Being the always social person that I am, you might not realize that this is not “me,” I am not good at talking to people I don’t know well.  I don’t excel at small talk.  I feel awkward and uncomfortable.  I would just rather be anywhere else.  Put me in a large social setting with my friends and I am as happy as a clam, but change the people for ones I don’t know and I clam up.

Anyway, I was invited to this event, and when the president of the company invites you to something you go, even if it isn’t “your thing.”  So the reception was Thursday night in a fancy hotel downtown.  I actually had a great time!  I realized while I was there that I did know some people and I was introduced to lots of others.  I have been working for my company for about 2.5 years and in my industry for 4 years.  And the best part of my night was right before I left, a lady walked in and came right up to me, and I realized that she was a former coworker of mine in my first job out of college 4 years ago.  We only worked together for 2 months and we were in different departments, but it was so great to see her and catch up.  We had a great conversation, and it was just a good reminder that God puts you exactly where He wants you, and will bless you there.  So I need to remember that the next time I am complaining about doing something.
